Congratulations on your decision to run for a position on the KPFT Local Station Board!
To assist you in your campaign, current board members, who've
been "through the fire", have submitted the following suggestions:
- Contact your entire network of friends to join or confirm KPFT membership and to be ready to vote.
- Prepare for and take advantage of all candidate opportunities:
- Candidate forums
- Web listing
- Folio listing
- PSAs.
- On-air panel
- Yahoogroups (do a search for KPFT within the Groups category)
- In your presentations cover three areas:
- Your experience, skills and relationships (identifications...)
- What you value about the station (and how you are associated)
- Goals for serving on the Board including committee work that interests you
- Attend KPFT activities:
- LSB meetings
- committee meetings
- events
- volunteer for fund drive
- Familiarize yourself with all of the programming, not just your favorite programs.
- Familiarize yourself with the KPFT website.
- Familiarize yourself with the Pacifica website, mission, history, by-laws and financials.
- Give your business card to everyone you meet and have a 1 minute conversation with each - if possible, get them to join before the August 31, 2004 cut-off.
- Discover the 'hot issues' of the day, form an opinion and become versed in them - do not change your opinion mid-election.
- Put up a website to express anything you do not have time to cover in a speech. Ask your friends to e-mail their friends with your link.
- Try to let folks know what community volunteer activities that you have done are. There is no such thing as a small contribution.
- Never take the forums for granted. If there is an opportunity to be heard by your fellow Pacificans plan your schedule around it. If you don't give them a reason to vote for you they won't!
- Even if it is something off of a milk carton.......say something brief and funny to let people know that you have at least a desire to have a sense of humor. None of us are standup comics but if you tell a good joke people will think well of you and if you tell a bad (but clean) joke people will give you that pity vote. Even a pity vote gets counted right along with the rest!!
Note: These suggestions are offered by those who've conducted successful campaigns. However, there is no guarantee of similar results.
