George Reiter (Staff Candidate)

Candidate Questionnaire

Candidate Statement

I am a long time political activist, union member and activist, thinker, and writer.
I see the Pacifica network as a key piece in the necessary transformation of the country and the planet from societies driven by fear and domination to ones empowered by love and the desire to be of service.
My experience of two years on the reconstituted LAB, years of experience with parliamentary procedures in university and activist organization contexts, and my commitment to the station fulfilling its mission, should be useful on the board, and I am willing to do the job.

Candidate Questionnaire

  1. Why do you want to be on the Local Station Board ?
    See my Candidates Statement
  2. How do you envision the Local Station Board working with the Pacifica Foundation,KPFT and the community?

The board is the governing board of the station, responsible to the Pacifica Foundation through the PNB, and should be composed of people who have constituencies in the progressive community and are committed to the mission of Pacifica.

  3. How could the station better serve its' listeners?
More local programming that assists in the development of local organizing initiatives.
  4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in underrepresented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience?
Find leaders in these communities and offer them the resources of the station, from on air time to PSA's for empowering their efforts.
  5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFT should solicit?
Matching funds from local organizations supporting the contributions of their members
  6. Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board?
I am professor of Physics at the University of Houston, have been a union organizer and am an activist on labor issues. I have been involved in peace activity from opposition to the war in Vietnam in the 60's to making public the real purposes behind “National Missile Defense” in the present. I come from a working class background and see class issues clearly. I've been instrumental in empowering local issues such as the fight against pension rollback, making known the political causes of flooding, and cleaning the air, and have extensive contacts in the activist communities that have intersected with those issues. I have considerable experience with parliamentary procedure, including two years on the LAB, and know how to use it to get things done for the group,
  7. Do you anticipate missing any Local Station Board meetings due to family or job related problems or inadequate transportation?
I may have to miss two meetings in the Summer if they are held monthly.
  8. On which Local Station Board committees are you interested in actively serving? If you are a current Local Station Board member, on which committees do you currently serve?
    Outreach, editorial(if formed),governance
