Dr. Jamal Assad (Listener Candidate)

Candidate Questionnaire

Candidate Statement

Vote for me, Dr. Jamal Assad. As a KPFT Board member, I would work hard to elevate the status of 90.1 FM not only in the transmission, but in the reception. I would work hard to make sure that KPFT increases its membership within the diverse sectors of our community and expands listener-sponsorship in our community and beyond by offering quality programming that addresses the needs of KPFT programmers and listeners.

Candidate Questionnaire

  1. Why do you want to be on the Local Station Board?
To help our most important community treasure – listener-sponsored KPFT -- maintain free speech and protect our station from freedom from repression.
  2. How do you envision the Local Station Board working with the Pacifica Foundation, KPFT and the community?
The station board must proactively strive to reflect the uniqueness of Greater Houston & beyond & present the views and interests of others who might otherwise not be heard.
  3. How could the station better serve it's listeners?
By making sure that rules are enforced to ensure our station meetings, including board meetings, are respectful, productive, and public-friendly. I would also recommend additional listener surveys and Town Hall meetings.
  4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in underrepresented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience?
#1 - I would recommend that board members be proactive in meeting with representative groups in order to find out what these communities need from the station and what types of programming they would like to see added.
#2 Hosting KPFT teach-ins & helping sponsor events in local communities would make under-represented populations aware of its presence.
  5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFT should solicit?
No strings attached grants. And, if corporate or small business sponsors are “socially responsible,” proving to meet the needs of the people first, rather than their own, they might be worthy of debate.
  6. Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board.
I have a combination of educational, work-related and activist experience that includes program direction, research, and training. I am a seasoned grassroots public policy community activist and a geophysicist.
  7. Do you anticipate missing any Local Station Board meetings due to family or job related problems or inadequate transportation?
    No
  8. On which Local Station Board committees* are you interested in actively serving?
Program Policy Committee, Program Council Committee, Program Evaluation Committee
  9. If you are a current Local Station Board member, on which committees do you currently serve?
    Not applicable
