Candidate Statement

It was the music that first attracted me. A friend said to check out this great station that was playing incredible music, music that you wouldn’t hear anywhere else. Once I started listening I was hooked. Here was music worth listening to. The more I listened, the more I found it was not only the music, but the news, the special programs, the discussions, and all of the information that was being passed to me. Here was a radio station that was giving me an opportunity to hear unfiltered information on what was going on in the world. Here was a chance to listen to people that had something interesting to say, not just the diluted, mind-numbing chatter that you heard on other stations. The programming at KPFT allows that opportunity to step out of my world and experience other worlds, hear other voices.

KPFT is a unique gift in Houston. It is a gift that must be preserved. Houston is a city of diversity, and diversity should be celebrated. We have to ensure that everyone has a voice. Programs such as Whole Mother, Connect the Dots, People of Earth, Queer Voices, and Latino Voices, just to name a few of many wonderful programs, do celebrate that diversity. These and all the programs on KPFT allow for outreach to all communities.

I believe that true democracy and freedom are threatened in our current national political environment. There has to be an effort to turn the tide. That can happen at the local level. In order to create change, we all have to be instruments; we have to become the change. KPFT is the vehicle; we can be the drivers of that effort. We can become the change.

I don’t think we can sit back and wait for something to happen; for someone to make a difference. I want to be a part of the Local Station Board of KPFT and I know that KPFT does make a difference. I can bring in the skills of project management, strategic planning, a “can-do” attitude and the desire to serve. I have been involved in tutoring and mentoring programs in Houston middle schools through the Business/School Partnership and the Junior Achievement program. For many years I have supported and participated in charitable events with the March of Dimes WalkAmerica, UNCF, and the United Way. I want to be elected to the LSB to be a part of ensuring that the existence of KPFT continues and thrives. I would like the opportunity to participate in spreading the word and the work of KPFT even further in Houston and the world community. I wish to be a part of making that change.

Candidate Questionnaire

  1. Why do you want to be on the Local Station Board?
KPFT is a unique gift in Houston. It is a gift that must be preserved. We have to ensure that everyone has a voice. I believe that true democracy and freedom are threatened in our current national political environment. There has to be an effort to turn the tide. That can happen at the local level. In order to create change, we all have to be instruments; we have to become the change. KPFT is the vehicle; we can be the drivers of that effort. I want to be elected to the LSB to be a part of ensuring that the existence of KPFT continues and thrives. I would like the opportunity to participate in spreading the word and the work of KPFT even further in Houston and the world community.
  2. How do you envision the Local Station Board working with the Pacifica Foundation, KPFT and the community?
The LSB can be the outlet to ensure that the principles and mission of Pacifica are carried forward by KPFT. Through committee and community activities the LSB can encourage, coordinate and support involvement of the station in community outreach.
  3. How could the station better serve it's listeners?
I would like to see the station solicit more feedback from the listeners through open forums and town hall style meetings. There also could be better communication of station sponsored events in order to get more listener participation.
  4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in underrepresented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience? More activities should be planned in various neighborhood centers, schools and local businesses that serve that community. KPFT members could volunteer as a team in clean-up efforts in communities that need attention. The outer loop areas should also be exposed to more of KPFT and station sponsored events.
  5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFT should solicit?
KPFT should solicit funding from foundations based on supporting the principles held by the Pacifica Mission Statement. Also, KPFT could partner with various charities to sponsor events in order to bring in general donations that could be allocated between the event sponsors.
  6. Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board.
I am currently employed as a Project Manager which is a position that requires coordination between multiple disciplines and people involved in a common goal. Previously, I have held positions in Strategic Planning and Budgeting. I can bring in these skills as well as a “can-do” attitude and the desire to serve. I have a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin. I have been involved in tutoring and mentoring programs in Houston middle schools through the Business/School Partnership and the Junior Achievement program. I have volunteered for Private Sector Initiatives (PSI) which is a organization that assists with home repairs for people in need. For many years I have supported and participated in charitable events with the March of Dimes WalkAmerica, UNCF, and the United Way.
  7. Do you anticipate missing any Local Station Board meetings due to family or job related problems or inadequate transportation?
I do not anticipate missing any of the Local Station Board meetings.
  8. On which Local Station Board committees* are you interested in actively serving?
I am interested in serving on committees where I can provide the most beneficial service to the station and to the community. The committees I am interested in include, but not limited to, Governance, Development, Outreach, Program Evaluation and Inclusion.
