Philip Jackson (Staff Candidate)

Candidate Questionnaire

Candidate Statement

Philip Jackson, Peace – Participation – Progressive Programming; These were the themes on which I ran last year. I got my tushie kicked. I am now throwing my hat (and sore tushie) back in the ring for another try.

Last time I stated that “Progressive political action to promote peace is the critical message of KPFT and the need is so critical today there is literally not time to be off message.” Now it is a year later, Election Day is only days away, the Houston Press has just recognized KPFT and its programmers for excellence, and left wing talk radio is on the rise. Yet our membership is stagnant, our listener base is shrinking, and our most urgently needed programs are hidden away out of reach. Just when we should be speaking the loudest our management has swapped our megaphone for a soap box. Why? So that Amy can help pass the hat? We don’t need Amy Goodman to pas the hat for us; we need to learn how to pass the hat for her. If enthusiastic passionate pitching works then that’s what we must learn to do.

We need to fertilize and cultivate the garden from which our excellent programming grows through outreach, training, and risk-taking. But more importantly we must present the fruits of our labor to the broadest possible audience. We must strive to double our listener base through creative membership drives and triple our number of listener supporters.

We need to be the progressive answer to the two-headed one-party system afflicting America today. We need to be the courageous voice of truth a cowardly media pool. We need to put Democracy Now squarely in drive time and include news in the weekend mix.

Proven organizational ability, leadership, maturity and good solid judgment, enthusiasm and the willingness to work hard, intelligence and creative problem solving, dedication to peace and a desire to serve the community are what I bring to the table. I want contribute to an environment of cooperation, productivity, diversity, and dedication to the Pacifica Mission, so please vote to elect me to the board where I will serve you well.
