Candidate Statement

In 1946 Doris and dr. Bob gave me the name Robert Gordon Graham …….I don’t remember asking them to be born……..and here I am now with a six year old daughter Shelbyblue (also didn’t ask to be born……. very much intended)……I have been a practicing sculptor since I was 21……and really don’t want to be an activist or run for the board at KPFT but since 9/11 I/we have no options but to actively engage our community…….all living things on the planet are very much dependent on just how ‘active’ I/we are.

When I ran last time and lost and told myself that I wouldn’t run again but when I saw the present board vote 13 to one in favor of adding Democracy Now to the 7am drive time hour and nothing happened………..well…..either the present board is unable to enact the listeners needs and intentions or they are unwilling to make management conform to the needs of the listeners………in any event this situation is intolerable and, if elected, I will insist……I will do with the powers of the LSB to enact the contributions of the listeners’ over management.

If I am elected and can’t get Democracy Now on at drive time when a major new audience could hear this vital information I will resign and I would suggest that every board member who voted for this and couldn’t or wouldn’t get management to conform to needs of the listeners to resign as well……because it would mean that the elections are a fraud and a huge waste of time, energy and recourses. Either we have a democracy (Now) or we tyranny.

Candidate Questionnaire

  1. Why do you want to be on the Local Station Board?
If elected…….I would make certain  that whatever the board has determined as a policy, process or procedure must be acknowledged, engaged and preformed by management
  2. How do you envision the Local Station Board working with the Pacifica Foundation, KPFT and the community?
By taking personal responsibility for creating a space for cooperation
  3. How could the station better serve it's listeners?
By actually engaging the listeners…..through community dialogues
  4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in underrepresented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience? Underrepresented communities are those who are convinced that Saddam Hussein had anything to do with 911,  those are the ones who need to be reached……reached through airing Democracy Now when these people are in their cars driving to work at drive time.  If I had voted as a board member to have this preformed and failed to perform,  I would resign…….because it would be a waste of my time to continue operating as a board member who's responsibility is to understand and advise management as to what is important to the listeners.
  5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFT should solicit?
    By  engaging the activist community
  6. Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board.
58 year old stay at home dad to a six year old daughter……traveled extensively…..19 years of education……3 years of teaching…..university level……..37 years as a sculptor…. 3 years in the Houston Coalition for Justice Not War…….presently on 27 e-mail groups lists ………contributing writing and info to most of them…….contributing member to St.Stephans' School Board……Co Founder of “Guerrilla Theater Brigade”……I am actively engaged in all aspects of my community
  7. Do you anticipate missing any Local Station Board meetings due to family or job related problems or inadequate transportation? I may be called away from a meeting that goes beyond 10pm……that is when my daughter needs me to read bedtime stories.
  8. On which Local Station Board committees are you interested in actively serving?
I am currently on the Program Policy Committee and have attended several Governance Committee meetings
