Candidate Statement

My name is Sandra D. Rawline. As a long time listener, supporter and volunteer of KPFT Radio Houston, I have a deep understanding of our very diverse community, it's wants and needs. KPFT Radio when properly utilized can serve as a valuable asset to the people in this signal area and my goal is to keep it on the air and be a part of making sure that all people in our signal area know about and are encouraged to become actively involved in KPFT.

Over the years KPFT has undergone many changes and while I have not agreed with all that has happened I understand the reasoning behind some of these changes. I believe that a good balance can be achieved that will serve all areas of our community and wish to do so without
alienating any more of our listeners. MUSIC that you hear on KPFT and not heard anywhere else is a mainstay of our station and has been since the beginning, it has been the one constant throughout KPFT's history. I have always been and will continue to be a strong supporter of our music programming. Our local news programming is coming into it's own and I hope to encourage more of what can be done on the local level. I will always be in support of positive, quality programming that is beneficial to our community.

Encouraged by our first election last year I now look forward to serving on the LSB in the capacity of a 3 year term. There is much work ahead for all of us and I look forward to working with members of our community, station staff and fellow volunteers to ensure that money is raised to keep KPFT on the air and to include as many members of our community who wish to be a part of KPFT and the Pacifica Foundation. I would appreciate your vote and Thank you for your time.

Candidate Questionnaire

  1. Why do you want to be on the Local Station Board ?
Because I feel that I can bring reason and positive productivity to the KPFT community. My goals are to help raise money to keep the station on the air and to out-reach to the many diverse communities to increase listeners/membership.
  2. How do you envision the Local Station Board working with the Pacifica Foundation,KPFT and the community?

The LSB is a liaison for our community. By interacting with members of our community to find out what they want in the way of programming, what is needed and then relaying this information to the LSB and foundation members. Always the goal is to out-reach. Everyone in our signal area should know about KPFT and what it has to offer.

  3. How could the station better serve its' listeners?
Out-reach, and more productive programming, not so much of what's wrong with our world but what we can do to make it better.
  4. Describe some actions you would take to increase the influence of the station in underrepresented communities and to increase the diversity of the listening audience?
Always out-reach! Some of my thoughts are to have bike-a-thons, walk-a-thons, marathons in different areas of our community to draw attention to KPFT, raise money and interact with the many different groups that make up our community.
  5. What sources of funding, other than listener donations, do you feel KPFT should solicit?
Any and all!! As long as the source for funding is not allowed to dictate the programming. There are numerous foundations that offer grants and we should be applying for all of them.
  6. Please state briefly the skills, experience, educational background, work history, organizational affiliations, areas of community service, areas of interest and expertise that you would bring to the Pacifica network as a member of the Local Station Board?
Experience: I have 45 years of life experience, all of which has been highly educational. Associates degree in education. Vast work history: teacher, manager, construction worker, licensed escrow officer to name but a few. Community volunteer, member of Amnesty International and Houston Blues Society. Long time member and volunteer of KPFT radio. I'm organized, hard working, positive minded, able to work well with others in order to achieve common goals.
  7. Do you anticipate missing any Local Station Board meetings due to family or job related problems or inadequate transportation?
No but I can not predict the future.
  8. On which Local Station Board committees are you interested in actively serving? If you are a current Local Station Board member, on which committees do you currently serve?
As a current LSB member I now serve on the Development and Election Committees. If elected to a 3 year term I intend to join both the Out-reach and Governance committees.
