BRIEF: More than 200 concerned local residents attended the Islamic Education Center's non-immigrant policy seminar this weekend.

The mostly Pakistani crowd at the education center also included nationals from other predominantly Muslim countries affected by upcoming deadlines.

Non-immigrants, such as tourists and students, from a dozen Middle Eastern countries and North Korea must register with the Immigration and Naturalization Service by January 10. Pakistani and Saudi nationals must register between January 13 and February 21.

Their confusion revolves around questions such as what type of visa holders must register and what to do if an individual's green card application is pending.

The large turnout resulted partly from fear related to the INS mass detention of Middle Eastern and Muslim males attempting to comply with last month's registration deadline.

The Muslim Public Affairs Council will have observers at the Houston INS office during this Friday's deadline.
