STORY: A United States war against Iraq could have a significant economic impact on the Citizens of Houston.
Local tax dollars are diverted to the costs of war, and not returned to our State and community to be spent on needed upgrades to public transportation and roadways, the reduction of pollution and social, health and education services in our city. The overall cost of a possible attack on Iraq has been conservatively estimated at over $100 billion. The cost to Houston taxpayers for such a war is estimated by Anita Dancs, research director of the non-profit, non-partisan Priorities Project: "The war is part of the budget that is mostly funded by individual income taxes. And Texas as a whole, based on its contribution to the whole pool of individual income taxes, we know that Texas would pay upwards of $5.6 billion." Dancs estimates the war to cost $467 million above and beyond what Houstonians currently pay in taxes for the military. Andy Howard, KPFT News, Houston.
