BRIEF: Renaming Conroe’s First Street after civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. sparked debate this week among residents, businesspeople and council members, who met to discuss the change.

On Tuesday, Conroe’s City Council voted 3-2 to refer the proposal to committee before council will take any action.

Councilman Duke Coon made a motion that First Street, one of Conroe’s oldest streets, be renamed, with the new name to be made permanent within three years.

Opponents of the measure say inconvenience and cost made the change problematic. Supporters said Conroe lags behind most other communities in naming a street to honor King.

The committee will present its findings to a council meeting in September.
