BRIEF:Lawyers for the City of Houston have requested money from the Houston City Council to pay for $170,000 worth of legal fees sought by attorneys who represented law officers in the Pedro Oregon cases. In 1998, Oregon was shot 12 times in his home when police forced entry into his apartment and found Oregon asleep in his bedroom. No weapons or drugs were found in the apartment where Oregon was killed.
Robert Thomas, Robert Armbruster and Daniel Neblitt are the attorneys who asked the City of Houston to approve fee claims of $351,000. The City's Attorney's office reached a settlement for $170,000. The City is required by law to reimburse the attorneys and voted for the measure Wednesday. Carol Alvarado voted against the measure and Keller was absent. In other police news, according to the October 22, Coalition, a national anti-police brutality organization, 32 people have been killed by police officers in the Houston area since September 11. More people died from police acts in Houston than in any other U.S. city in the same time period.
